The energy challenges

Energy, of all kinds, is today facing new challenges.

The first – and doubtless most significant – of these challenges is carbon mitigation in energy in order to help fast-track the transition to a world free from CO2 emissions.

The second challenge concerns the need to search for new energy sources and thus cope with the looming depletion of fossil resources.

The geo-distribution of energy resources is causing new threats to the energy sector, since these resources are concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer stakeholders. One of the most striking illustrations of this is our increasing dependence on Russian gas.

Finally, all stakeholders must ensure adequate handling of economic cycles given price fluctuations and the emergence of new players who will transform the energy landscape in the years ahead.
